CHFR-FM 96.5 Hornby Community Radio Report

Exciting news, we have received our license upgrade from the CRTC, and the new transmitter is now on order! This means that we will be able to increase our broadcast signal from its current 5-8 watts as mandated by a Developmental License to 50 watts with our new Low Power FM license. This should solve a lot of issues in the community regarding people being unable to hear the radio.

If you don’t own a radio, the Hornby Island Co-op stocks portable radios downstairs in the hardware store for a reasonable price, or you can likely find a working unit at the Free Store. Plenty of places in Courtenay have them, too, and remember to put (rechargeable) batteries in them, as our generator ensures that we can now broadcast during power outages.

Don’t forget, our AGM will be held on Sunday May 4 at 2pm. The venue will be New Horizons rather than at Joe King this year, as the clubhouse is being used by the carpentry students (who will be working on some projects for Joe) during this period.

Please remember, if you are organizing or promoting an event, do drop off a poster or written description to the studio so our DJs can read them in the community announcements. We announce events several times a day.

If you would like to be a DJ, there are always new spots opening up in the schedule; remember, membership in both HCRS and HIAA are required. Memberships for HCRS are $15, good for one year, and are available at the Hornby Gas Bar, or on this website (link in the header). It’s easy, you can pay via PayPal!

We are very grateful to the businesses and individuals who support our community radio station as sponsors. Since, as a radio station, we are not legally allowed to be a registered charity as many of the non-profit groups on the island are, we rely on other forms of support from our community. Thank you so much to our current sponsors, and to the sponsors of the future, as well as to our wonderful membership!
